(English version for international readers will follow the Japanese content)

日本人が苦手な「~する」という表現

この「~する」というのは、日本の人が意外とまごつく表現です。すんなり出てこないことが多いのですが、公式なイベントやビジネスに関わる出来事について、一番よく使うのは 'hold' です。単純過去形・過去分詞は 'held' です。

【能動態 過去形】
"We held a meeting to discuss various issues." 「様々な問題を議論するために会議を開きました。」

【能動態 過去完了形】
"We have already held two meetings regarding the matter."「私たちはもうこの事柄に関して2回のミーティングを行いました。」

どういうときに受動態にするのか?

じつは 'hold' は受動態で使うことも多いのです。日本の人は「~を開催する」と表現するのですが、英語ネイティブはよく「~が開催される」と表現します。受動態が苦手な日本の人にとって、これがつらいのかも知れません。

"The boss will hold a meeting."「上司がミーティングを開きます。」

簡単な表現ですが、これをとっさに受動態にするとなかなか難しくないですか?受動態の例を見てみましょう。英語でニュースを読む人は 'hold' を受動態 'held' で見たことがあるはずです。

"The next Olympic Games will be held in 2020 in Tokyo."「次のオリンピックは2020年に東京都で開催される。」

受動態を使うのは「何が」行われるかが重要で、「誰が」行うかはそれほど重要でない場合です。まさにオリンピックですね(いや、オリンピックを誰が仕切るのかは、けっこうな問題になっているようですが...)。

受動態の「時制」も苦手じゃない?

時制にも気を付けましょう。そのイベントはもう終わりましたか。まだなのですか?それとも将来に開催されるのですか?

【受動態 現在進行形】
"A meeting is being held (in order) to determine the minimum wage."「最低賃金を決定するための会議が行われています。」

【受動態 過去形】
"A stockholders' meeting was held at the Royal Hotel."「ローヤルホテルで株主総会が開催されました。」

便利な表現の 'take place'

もう一つ覚えてもらいたいのは、便利な表現の 'take place' です。自動詞なので、だれが行うのは関係なく、文にも「誰が」は要りません。

"A memorial will take place in memory of the deceased."「死者のために追悼式が行われます。」

プライベートなイベントなら 'have'

プライベートのイベントなどだったらどうなるのでしょうか?

"I'm holding a party this Saturday evening"

などは、変というほどではないけど、ちょっとフォーマルな感じかもしれません。カジュアルなイベントは 'have' が多いです。

"I'm having a housewarming party, if you'd like to come?"「引っ越し祝いのパーティーを開くけどどう?来られる?」
"We had a barbecue for my grandma's birthday."「おばあちゃんのためバーベキューパーティーした。」

もちろん 'have' をビジネスの場でも使うことが可能だし、会話ではよく聞きます。

"We need to have a meeting about this ASAP."「これについてできるだけ早くミーティングを開かないと行かない。」

いかがでしたか?これで何を「する」のもこわくないですね!

Meetings and Parties in English-1

Sometimes it's hard to balance our professional and personal lives. In both, there are events happening - almost every day you have meetings at work, and then on the weekends, perhaps, there is a birthday party. A student of mine tells me how he has to meet with some international clients in his job, and how for the weekend he had to arrange a dinner party at his home for some friends. He tries to tell me about the events, but he struggles to use the correct verb.

In the case of business-related and official events, the verb "hold" is the most common. It's often used in its passive form, too, which often trips up Japanese people when trying to use it correctly. The subject of the sentence is the one who "holds", e.g.
"The boss will hold a meeting."「上司がミーティングを開きます。」
Pay attention to the simple past and past participle forms, which are both "held".
"We held a meeting to discuss various issues." 「様々な問題を議論するために会議を開きました。」
"We have already held two meetings regarding the matter."「私たちはもうこの事柄に関して2回のミーティングを行いました。」
Another similarly useful phrase is "take place", which is an intransitive verb. Who is carrying out the event cannot be included when using this verb.
"A memorial will take place in memory of the deceased."「死者のために追悼式が行われます。」

If you ever read the news, you'll likely come across the verb "hold" in its passive form, which is used either because it is already obvious or unimportant who will be holding the event. The object of the sentence, i.e. the event, is what the sentence is focused on. For example, "The next Olympic Games will be held in 2020 in Tokyo."「次のオリンピックは2020年に東京都で開催される。」
Pay careful attention, too, to the relative time of the event. Has it already finished? Has it started? Not yet? "A stockholders' meeting was held at the Royal Hotel."「ローヤルホテルで株主総会が開催されました。」

What if it's not an official event? Is it possible to say "I'm holding a party this Saturday evening"? It's certainly not a mistake, but perhaps a little formal-sounding! In more casual situations, we usually use "have" when talking about events.
"I'm having a housewarming party, if you'd like to come?"「引っ越し祝いのパーティーを開くけどどう?来られる?」
"We had a barbecue for my grandma's birthday."「おばあちゃんのためバーベキューパーティーした。」
The verb "throw" is also common.
"We're going to throw a surprise party for Linda."「リンダのためサプライズ・パーティーをするつもりだ。」
It's important to know that this verb can also be used in business contexts, and is more likely to be used in spoken English.
"We need to have a meeting about this ASAP."「これについてできるだけ早くミーティングを開かないと行かない。」
