"Do you have any hopes for the future?"「

"Wait!" 「

(English version for international readers will follow the Japanese content)

「ちょっと待ってください」"Just a moment" と "One moment"

A: "Could I get one of your brochures?"「
B: "Of course. One moment, please."「

"Just a moment"
"Do you want to play some cards?" 「
"Sure. Just a sec while I finish the washing up."「いいよ。

「ちょっと待って!」"Hold on" と "Hang on"

A: "Can I have a cookie?"「
B: "Hold on. They're still quite hot."「

A: "Are you ready to go?"「準備大丈夫?」
B: "Hang on a minute. I haven't brushed my teeth yet."「

I'll be right with you" と "Bear with (me)"

I'll be right with you" もしばしば聞こえます。
A: "I'd like to apply for a membership card."「
B: "Okay. Please have a seat and I'll be right with you."「かしこまりました。

"Please bear with us while we try to find a solution."「

A: "May I speak with Ms. Ingram, please?"「
B: "Certainly. Please hold while I transfer your call."「

A: "Do you have any tickets left for Thursday's show?"「木曜日のショーのチケットがありますか。」
B: "One moment, please, while I check the availability."「

「えっとね」「なんだろう」"Let me think" と "Let me see"

Can you remember the first book you ever read? 「

"The first book? Hmm, let me think..."「

Wait A Minute!

"Do you have any hopes for the future?"「
Your English teacher has just asked you this question. Although you've understood it, the answer is not so easy to form in English, so you need a moment to think. But, you don't know how to ask the teacher to do so, and now the moment of awkward silence is getting longer and longer, so you just panic and blurt out:
"Wait!"

I've had this response before on several occasions. I thought it was quite humorous, but it could catch a native speaker off guard as it can sound aggressive or childish. It reminded me of when I was very young and my little legs couldn't keep up with my mother's, so I often cried "Wait!". So, how can you make this phrase more appropriately polite? By saying "Please wait", right? Well, this is honestly not what native speakers say. Strangely, this still just doesn't have the required politeness and still sounds a little blunt.

Let's start with some more proper expressions. We commonly use "Just a moment" and "One moment" when asking someone to wait, usually followed by "please" to add politeness.
A: "Could I get one of your brochures?"「
B: "Of course. One moment, please."「
When attending to customers or guests, we also often use the phrase "I'll be right with you".
A: "I'd like to apply for a membership card."「
B: "Okay. Please have a seat and I'll be right with you."「かしこまりました。
Another suitable phrase is "Bear with (me)".
"Please bear with us while we try to find a solution."「

When you need to explain the situation, as in why you are asking the listener to wait, you can connect your explanation with the word "while".
(on the telephone)
A: "May I speak with Ms. Ingram, please?"「
B: "Certainly. Please hold while I transfer your call."「
(at the box office) A: "Do you have any tickets left for Thursday's show?"「木曜日のショーのチケットがありますか。」
B: "One moment, please, while I check the availability."「

Even in less formal situations, "Wait!" can be a risky phrase to use, as it can often suggest impatience. That's why we prefer to use safer phrases like "Hold on" or "Hang on".
A: "Can I have a cookie?"「
B: "Hold on. They're still quite hot."「
You can also add "a minute" or "a second", or even "a sec", which is a very casual contraction of "a second".
A: "Are you ready to go?"「準備大丈夫?」
B: "Hang on a minute. I haven't brushed my teeth yet."「
Phrases like "just a moment" are also used in more casual conversation.
"Do you want to play some cards?" 「
"Sure. Just a sec while I finish the washing up."「いいよ。

As in the earlier scenario, it may be the case that you have been asked a question and you need some time to think. For this, you can always make use of the convenient phrases "Let me think" and "Let me see". So, now I have a question for you:
Can you remember the first book you ever read? 「

"The first book? Hmm, let me think..."「
